| My Fair Lady Review by NODA Representative Anne Key Huckerby May 2001 What
a super show! Both Jeff and I thoroughly enjoyed last night's
produciton of "My Fair Lady". Congratulations to Ruth on what, I
believe, is her first attempt at directing. She made a good job of it.
First of all, a mention of the set and the back stage crew. It can be such an awkward show to stage with so many changes from Higgins' study to various parts of London... not to mention Ascot! Robert Birch's design suited the stage very well and meant changes could take place smoothly and without a great deal of fuss... and that's what the audiences like these days. The lighting was good, and I understand Ella is gradually taking over the reins in that department. Well done. The costumes were excellent, especially as they came from SADOS's wardrobe. Care should be taken, however, to ensure that accessories are in keeping with the era. The gentlemen's shoes (particularly those at the Opera, at Ascot and the Embassy) should all have been highly polished. Not all were! Without exception the leads were excellent. There was a good standard of singing throughout and the chorus participation was good. I like to see a small number of children in the cast, too. The choreography was good, with well-rehearsed routines and easy movement. Again, well done. It was good to see Anthony waving the baton about again. His orchestra accompanied very well and only very occasionally became rather too loud for the performers on stage. I noted, however, that there seem to be a bit of a problem with the sound amplification from time to time. Sadly this appears the case at so many productions I see. Please pass on my congratulations to all who were in any way responsible for this successful show.
