Calamity Jane Review - NODA

Jeff and I enjoyed last Wednesday evening’s performance of "Calamity Jane”. It was clear from the applause and vociferous cheering at the curtain call that the rest of the audience agreed with this.

You already know my views on Rebecca’s portrayal of Calamity. She played her as a tomboy, and quite rightly too, but I found her over-amplified voice rather too much to contend with. She is blessed with a strong powerful voice and so, too, is Daran and I feel both could have done the show well without having extra help. Trish and Craig worked very well together, their duet Love You Dearly was delightful. Mark’s Francis Fryer was great and David’s Rattlesnake was excellent. He remained in character so well.

The rest of the named characters played their parts well and the chorus participation was good. The three piece band accompanied very well.

I liked the opening of the stagecoach racing through the countryside. I would have preferred not to have had the credit titles as well, but no doubt there were many who would disagree with this. The set was very well thought out and scene changes took place quite smoothly. The lighting was good and so were the effects. The costumes were excellent.
